There is nothing more frustrating than finishing a long flat pack wardrobe build, stepping back to admire your work, and realizing the doors are completely crooked, uneven, or scraping against each other when they close.
Many people assume they made a mistake during the structural assembly or that the wardrobe panels are warped. However, in 95% of cases, the issue is simply that the hinges haven’t been calibrated.
Modern flat pack furniture from brands like IKEA, Wayfair, and Next uses a clever mechanical component called a European hinge (or concealed hinge). These hinges are intentionally designed with built-in adjustment screws so you can fine-tune the door’s position down to the millimeter.
In this quick guide, we will show you exactly how to read a European hinge and adjust your wardrobe doors so they hang perfectly straight.
The Three Screws You Need to Know
If you open your wardrobe door and look closely at the metal hinge mechanism attached to the inside side-panel, you will see a mounting plate and a hinge arm containing two or three screws. Each screw controls a completely different direction of movement: Left-to-Right, Up-and-Down, and In-and-Out.
Let’s break down how to use each one.
1. The Left-to-Right Adjustment (Fixing Gaps and Overlaps)
If your doors are overlapping in the middle, or if there is a massive, uneven gap between them when closed, this is the screw you need to adjust.
- The Screw: It is always the screw located closest to the wardrobe door itself.
- How to Adjust It:
- Turning this screw clockwise moves the edge of the door closer toward the side wall of the wardrobe (widening the gap in the middle).
- Turning it counter-clockwise pushes the door toward the center (closing the gap).
- Pro Tip: If the top of the door is tilting inward and hitting the opposite door, turn the left-to-right screw on the top hinge clockwise, and the bottom hinge screw counter-clockwise.
2. The Up-and-Down Adjustment (Aligning the Top Edges)
If one door sits physically higher than the other, making the top line of your wardrobe look jagged and uneven, you need to adjust the height.
- The Screw: These are the two screws located on the top and bottom of the mounting plate that anchors the hinge directly to the wardrobe’s side panel.
- How to Adjust It:
- Loosen both screws on the mounting plate slightly on both the top and bottom hinges.
- Physically slide the entire door up or down until the top edge matches the neighboring door.
- Hold the door steady and retighten the screws firmly.
3. The In-and-Out Adjustment (Fixing Doors That Pop Open)
If your wardrobe doors are scraping against the cabinet frame when you open them, or if the top of the door sticks out and won’t sit flush with the frame when closed, you need to adjust the depth.
- The Screw: This is the screw located furthest away from the wardrobe door, sitting deep inside the wardrobe frame. (On some hinges, this screw is housed inside a tiny sliding track).
- How to Adjust It:
- Loosen this screw slightly.
- Pull the hinge arm slightly forward (toward you) to give the door more breathing room against the frame, or push it backward to make it flush.
- Retighten the screw to lock the depth in place.
Rules of Thumb for Hinge Calibration
Hinge adjustment requires patience. It is an exercise in small, incremental changes:
- Make Quarter-Turns Only: Never spin a hinge screw multiple full rotations at once. Make a quarter-turn, close the door, step back, and check the alignment.
- Adjust Both Hinges: If a door is severely tilted, you will usually need to make opposite adjustments to both the top and bottom hinges to balance out the tension.
- Check Your Level First: Before touching your hinges, put a spirit level on top of the wardrobe. If the entire wardrobe frame is leaning forward or twisting because of an uneven bedroom floor, the doors will never align. Use plastic shims under the wardrobe base to get the frame perfectly level first.
